2nd Beach, Newport 6/5/10
There was a small and not very clean swell this morning. It wasn’t forecast to be much of anything but there were a few rides to be had at 2nd beach. I had never even seen it before last night, when Connie and I went exploring and found it. There is a little parking lot there, and both last night and this morning there didn’t seem to be much of anything happening there except surfers checking the place out – which is just fine by me.
I took the 9’6” Channin out, because my Bruce Jones has a ding in the tail that I haven’t had a chance to repair yet. The weather was overcast, after the severe thundershowers that we had at about 8:00 AM this morning. I arrived at about 10:00 AM. I surfed for an hour and a half. At one point there were six of us in the water, but most of the time there were only three including myself. There is no real need for booties or gloves anymore, as the water temperature is warming up. I wore my booties anyway, but I dumped the cold-water gloves and wore my paddling gloves.
I will definitely return to 2nd beach. I’ve heard good things, and I have the feeling that on days when there are bigger, cleaner conditions, this is a good place to be.
